Car Gear Oils

Car gear oil, or gearbox oil, performs a similar function to car engine oil but is not subject to the same high operating temperatures and has different properties. To provide maximum protection to the interlocking parts of a gearbox which often operate under extremely high pressures, car gear oil is thicker than other car oils. Car gear oil contains sulphur compounds which form a protective coating on the gearbox’s metal surfaces, preventing them from coming into direct contact and overheating. Car gear oil also minimises the wear and tear that gearbox parts are subject to in every-day usage. Unlike engine oil gear oil is not affected by the dirt and acid build-up associated with combustion and does not need topping up or changing in the same way.
